Richard Lynn "Dick" Humeston, 84, of Boone, passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, March 17, at the First United Methodist Church located at Seventh & Arden Streets in Boone with Rev. Philip J. Webb officiating.

Burial will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone. Full Military Honors will be conducted by the Boone Veterans Council at the graveside.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 16, at the Walter ~ Schroeder Funeral Home located at Fifth & Story Streets in Boone from 2:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Family will be present to greet friends at the funeral home from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Visitation will continue on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church from 8:30 A.M. until the service at 10:00 A.M.

Richard was born on May 23, 1927 at Humeston, Iowa to Charles and Nelle (Boyce) Humeston.

Richard attended and graduated from Humeston High School in 1945. He then joined the United States Navy and served from June 13, 1945 to August 6, 1946 as a Seaman First Class.

Richard attended Drake University in Des Moines and graduate in 1952, with his Master's degree in Music Education. He taught instrumental music at Knoxville, Iowa for 5 years, Morman Trail School for 1 year, and moved to Boone in 1965, where he taught for 17 years.

Richard was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Boone, he was a 50 year member of the Des Moines Chapter of American Federation of Musicians, and member of numerous bands over the last 65 years in central Iowa. He enjoyed music and played the clarinet and saxophone. He had collected many record albums over the years.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Charles.

Richard is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Humeston of Boone, Iowa; his daughter and son in law, Cindy Smiley (Jim) of Marshalltown, Iowa; his son and daughter in law, John Humeston (Jill) of Ankeny, Iowa; his 4 grandchildren, Megan Lynn Smiley and her special friend, Daniel Mathews and Jordan James Smiley of Marshalltown, Iowa, Katie Lynn Clayberg and her husband, Jon of Omaha, Nebraska, and Laura Marie Reichart and her special friend, Tyler Nash of Ankeny, Iowa; 2 nephews and 2 nieces.

Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church, the Israel Family Hospice House or the Boone County Humane Society, in memory of Richard Lynn Humeston.
